Parenting is one of the hardest jobs there is. You will want to remain firm with your children, but it is just as important to be fair, honest and, most importantly, consistent. Once you have a good handle on these concepts, then you have a good foundation for effective parenting techniques.
It doesn’t matter how much you love your children, eventually you will need a break. This will allow you to keep you own identity along with the role of a parent. Even if your sick child begins to show signs of feeling better after a few days of antibiotics, you should follow the doctor’s orders exactly and finish the course of therapy. If your child does not finish the entire dosing plan, weakened bacteria may remain in his or system and become resistant to the antibiotics.
Never smoke in the house if you are a parent. In fact, it’s a good idea to stop smoking completely. Secondhand smoke can be very harmful to the smoker and everyone around them. Children who breathe second-hand smoke are more likely to develop asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis or other respiratory issues.
Always stay involved in your child’s life. Teachers are very happy to share information concerning your child with regards to how they are performing at school. Because of this, you have no excuse to keep abreast of your child’s school activities.
Is your baby hard to calm? Put some lavender oil on your neck and then hold them. The gentle fragrance will have a calming effect on your child. This can be a good bedtime trick as well. Lavender oil dabbed on a sheet, pillow or favorite sleep toy can create a calm, sleep inducing feeling. Read to your child at least once a day. Children that are exposed to reading in this positive way will be much more likely to become avid readers themselves. Reading to them several times a day should be the desired goal but even if you only have time in your busy schedule for a quick bedtime story it will make a world of difference in how your child regards reading. When breastfeeding, do not try to feed the baby on a strict schedule. Letting the baby eat when he is hungry will allow your supply and the baby’s hunger to develop as needed. If you try to feed him at a set time, he will not suck as hard and your body will not respond with letting down your milk. Your baby knows when he is hungry so follow his cues. Not every child is going to be a social butterfly. There are many children who are shy, and that is perfectly okay. You should, however, make sure your child isn’t unusually withdrawn. Consider taking your child to their doctor or to a therapist to ensure there isn’t something more problematic at the heart of their antisocial behavior. Limit the amount of television your child watches each day. Too much television is bad for your child, mentally and physically. It is one cause of childhood obesity, can lead to poor eyesight, and contributes to feelings of anxiety. Have your child play with toys or go outside instead.
While having children will completely change your life it is important not to become obsessed with them. Most people will probably love your children as much as you do, but if your life starts to revolve around them you may find your friends become quite annoyed with you and your lack of attention. If your child is constantly rubbing his eyes, it could be a sign of pinkeye. If you notice unusual discharge or a red color in the eye, take your child to the doctor right away. Pinkeye is highly contagious and is spread easily through touch. Have him wash his hands often and don’t let other children share his food or toys while contagious.
