Floydada High School's UIL Science Team and Mary Warren were big winners at the prestigious UIL State Academic Meet. The State Meet was held in Austin on the University of Texas Campus on May 2 and 3.

The Science Team won the Conference 2A Science contest. Abel Cortinas, a senior, placed 3rd individually in Science. Abel was also the Alternate Top Scorer in Chemistry. J. C. Simpson, a senior, placed 6th in Science and Sean Miller, a junior, placed 9th. Senior Charlie Beedy rounded out the Science team. The Science contest had 28 contestants this year. "I believe the experiences I have gained from being on the UIL Science team rank unparalleled among any other experience I have had the privilege to undergo," said Senior Abel Cortinas. "The UIL State Meet was, and has been, one of the neatest and most memorable events throughout my high school career. The team worked hard this year, and it shows in the gold medals we won for team. UIL Science has been one of the most important events I have been involved with, especially in regards towards the AP classes I have taken, such as AP Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. UIL has allowed me to constantly review for my AP test, so the amount of preparation time it has provided has proven invaluable."

Mary Warren, a senior, competed in Persuasive Speaking at the State Meet. Mary brought home the 4th place medal in this competition. Mary is coached by Mrs. Dana Herrington and Mrs. Kensey Thompson.

"UIL has mean so much to me over the past four years, " said Mary Warren. "I was so fortunate to make it to state my senior year, and end up placing 4th. It is still hard to believe that I am the fourth best 2A speaker in the state of Texas, but I love the fact that I am! I wouldn't change this experience for the world, and I'm so glad that I have been a part of UIL throughout high school."

Floydada High School is proud of these students and coaches for the extra effort it takes to place at the State level.

Dennis Jernagin Will Sing in Lockney on Memorial Day

DENNIS JERNAGIN

Dennis Jernagin, a favorite songwriter and singer among listeners of Christian music, will be part of the Memorial Day celebration in Lockney, May 26.

Jernagin readily accepted the invitation to be part of the event, from Ed Marks the President of Lockney's Veterans Association.

"I thought it would be awesome to have the song 'Let Freedom Ring', which was written by Jernagin, sung during the time we honor our Veterans on Memorial Day," said Marks. ("Let Freedom Ring" was also named as the theme song for the 2004 National Day of Prayer)

"I thought, 'Wouldn't it be awesome if Jernagin could be there and sing it himself?'. So I just picked up the phone and called his office.

"They told me he likes to do those sort of things and before I knew it he was all booked up."

Marks has also lined Jernagin up for a concert at Wayland Baptist University and at Plainview's Trinity Fellowship Church and Amarillo's Trinity Church.

There will be no charge for the Memorial Day event in Lockney, however the Veteran's Association would accept donations to help pay Jernagins expenses.

The songs of Dennis Jernagin, such as "You Are My All in All", "Nobody Fills My Heart Like Jesus", "Thank-you" and "We Will Worship the Lamb of Glory" as well as hundreds of others, are sung literally all over the world.

Routinely, multiple songs from Jernagin rank in the Top 100 on the Church Copyright Licensing (CCLI) charts for the most performed songs in churches.

Jernagin has released over 20 full-length CDs, multiple songbooks and folios, and has authored more than five books including his two most recent, "Giant Killers" and "A Worshipers Guide to the Holy Land".

His newest CD, "I Cry Holy" will be given away to each person who purchases a $10 ticket to the Wayland Concert, May 24, at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets to the concert are available at the Wayland Bookstore, City Bank in Lockney, Trinity Church in Plainview and at the door that night.

The Memorial Day events will begin in Lockney at 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 26. Jernagin will be joined in the ceremony by an Honor Guard firing a salute. The names of the KIA's will be read at the ceremony.

Public Speaks to FISD Board Concerning Coach Brattain

By Alice Gilroy

FISD Board met Tuesday night, April 29th, and listened to several public comments concerning the possible resignation of Coach Chris Brattain and after an executive session voted to hire Mac Sherman as the Junior High School principal, and Brian Place as next year's Band Director.

Two basketball players, Titus Miller and Aarrhon Flores, spoke during public comment concerning Coach Brattain and asking the board to do all they could to keep Coach Brattain from resigning his position.

Miller told the board Brattain was a "great man and a good friend to all of us (boys on the team)."

"He has been another father for us," said Miller. "It would be a great loss to the school and community if he left. We love him and want him back next year."

Also speaking on behalf of Brattain were Latricia Miller, Renee Weeks, and Tina Weeks.

The board made no comments and can take no action from public meetings until after a duly posted on an agenda.

But this week, Coach Brattain told this newspaper that he had submitted his resignation on Wednesday, April 30.

"It was a very hard decision to make," said Brattain. "I appreciate the community and the kids. I decided to submit my resignation early so the district would have more time to find someone good for the basketball program.

"It is really tough leaving."

Brattain, and Coach Tyler Helms, have been hired by the Idalou ISD.

Brattain will coach basketball and serve as Junior High Assistant Principal. He will also be an assistant coach for football and track.

Helms will assist in all sports and in the classroom.

Also speaking during public comments was Dara Ware who said she was speaking on behalf of the Floydada Junior High faculty and staff.

Ware was there to show support for the hiring of Mac Sherman as Junior High Principal.

"The unanimous desire of our faculty and staff is to have Mr. Sherman as the principal of our campus," said Ware.

"Throughout the past year he has been the rock that has supported us"

Although Mr. Sherman lives in Lockney this did not seem to cause any negative feeling with the FISD faculty and staff.

"Mr. Sherman's support is evident by has attendance at all the activities and sporting events in which our students participate," said Ware. "Loyalty and enthusiasm are not deterred by his personal address."

Mr. Grimes gave a construction report to the school board and asked for an additional 23,000 to upgrade the old windows to be operable windows instead of fixed windows.

Grimes admitted the architect made a mistake in the plans and did not draw in the windows right on one wing of the school.

"If the fixed windows (12 of them) aren't changed to operable windows then we will have to put in sprinklers," said Grimes.

Grimes apologized but emphasized that if the plans had been drawn right the district would have still been faced with this cost.

After discussion Grimes and the board agreed to a motion of $22,052 to fix the windows.

In other discussion the board had considered renaming Duncan Elementary after the construction was completed. However research showed that when Maude Duncan deeded the land to the district for the school the stipulation was made that the school would be officially known as Arthur B. Duncan in honor of Maude Duncan's father.

The Board also made the official motion to consolidate grades Pre-K to 5th grade to Duncan Elementary.

The board also voted to lead another 2 classroom portable building until construction was over. The cost to the district will be $3,200 to deliver, $2,800 to set up, $700 a month, and $2,800 to take down.

In other action the board voted to rescind a previous motion to have a $300 minimum bid for selling taxing entity lots.

A bid of $2,100 was accepted from Gordon Adams on a house at 802 Menefee.

Superintendent Jerry Vaughn told the board the district had been approved for a $88,740.00 Rural Technology Grant.

Resignations were accepted by the board, from 5th grade teacher Kelly Robbins, speech therapist Eleah Garrett, softball coach Brandon Gilliland, Band Director John Odom, and 7th/8th grade reading teacher Sarah Sanders.

The bank statement showed a the general fund checking account balance of $4,095,170.88 and a CD of $3,387,000.00. In the capital project fund and 365 day CD total of $2,750,000.00 and a 120 day CD of $750,000.00.

By The Way | by Alice Gilroy

Years ago I found a way to keep track of my wandering young teenage son. It was with a cell phone.

At the time I was going to hold out and not get him a phone. It was just an added expense and frankly I thought it was a luxury he didn't really need.

But we broke down and got the phone and it turned out to be a good way to find him when I needed him.

When we first presented it to him we were immediately elevated to the status of "best parents in the whole wide world".

Eventually it was pointed out to him that we were just trying to keep track of him--like a "GPS System". Unfortunately our motives were then suspect and we fell off the pedestal.

After our son moved out and went to college we continued to pay the cell phone bill just so we could be sure and keep in touch. But the cell phone didn't seem to work as well as it did when he lived at home.

He quit returning phone calls as fast--sometimes it took days to get a call back.

But there is hope out there for you parents who may be going through the same thing. It's called, TEXT MESSAGING!

I know I know. There are millions of parents out there who have already discovered this. I admit, we are slow in technology progression. But, I have excuses.

First--I have a son. Not a daughter who loves to talk on the phone. It just didn't seem to be a necessity.

Second--I'm cheap. I didn't want to pay extra for text messaging.

Third--I'm cheap.

The last time my son came home he begged for a phone upgrade and the service upgrade of text messaging.

I said, "No", to the service upgrade. I told him he didn't deserve it because he never returned my phone calls anyway.

He told me text messaging was different. He promised he would "text".

I have no idea why "texting" is different, but it turns out for some strange reason that he will "text" when he doesn't call.

So now I've learned to text.

I've gone from not wanting to text--to upgrading my service--to wanting one of those phones that looks like a teeny typewriter/calculator so you can text super fast.

I've also progressed to taking a bunch of time trying to spell everything right and making sure the grammar is correct, to text messaging abbreviation.

Oh sure, I've got a lot to learn. I've really only abbreviated with "U", for "you", and "UR" for "you are". But I'm excited at the prospect of being bilingual. I was never any good in Spanish, but this just might work.

A friend of mine printed out a sheet of paper with all the text messaging abbreviations for me.

It is so KEWL!

Did you know that POS means "Parent over shoulder".

Now why would they have a special abbreviation for that?

PLZ! YGBKM. I'm RME. (Please. You got to be kidding me. I'm rolling my eyes).

I am afraid that as soon as I learn this, the next new thing will start and I'll have to figure out a new way to stay in touch with my son.

Oh well. BFN and HAND!

(Bye for now and have a nice day!)
