K.K. AND KATIE KELLEY work together in their kitchen to prepare home grown vegetables and fruits for canning and competition at the Floyd County Fair.
LAURA MILLER holds up the pant suit and blouse she has made for competition at the Floyd County Fair. Fair Participants Now Working on Projects For Competition Although the County Fair activities won't begin until September 5, the preparation for participating in the Fair has already started. The County is full of blue ribbon winners who will be bringing their work back to the fair for competition among chefs and artists. Youth and adults are already canning, sewing, and quilting their entries for the Fair. Artistic and photographic work will also be on display, as well as flower arrangements and agriculture exhibits. Fifteen year old K.K. and her 17 year old sister, Katie Kelley, are already busy preparing canned goods for the fair. Active in 4-H, the girls learned to can as a 4-H Food Preservation project. The girl's mother, Carol Kelley, say the girls work well together on "most days" "It depends on how well they're getting along on that day," said Carol. The Kelley sisters are also Junior Master Gardeners. Stacy Reeves, of Floydada, has set a goal to finish a quilt she would like to enter into competition. She also has crafts, sewing, and photographs to enter. Reeves says she likes winning the ribbons, but she likes winning the money the best. Eighteen year old, Laura Miller will be returning to competition with hand made clothes. Another ribbon winner, Laura has been active in 4-H for 10 years and says she has also competed for 10 years. The Fair will last 3 days and include a carnival, trap shoot, kid's tractor pull, an auction, and Friday night entertainment from the "Slo Motion" band. back to top Editor, Re: The 7/25 article about concerns with the Ag/Vocation Program at FHS. Unlike the citizens quoted in the article, I am in support of the FHS administration's decision to replace an ag teacher with a teacher who will be able to focus on vocational training. The vast majority of our students will never be farmers, nor will a large percentage of our students ever go to college. There are many traditional trades like plumbing, electrical, bookkeeping, data entry, diesel mechanics, and carpentry that provide a comfortable income. In addition, there are newer vocations like desktop publishing, graphic and web design, data network installation, landscaping, and telesales that are extremely lucrative if our students are trained properly. So, if I have any criticism of the FHS administration regarding vocational programs, it is that they are not implementing change more quickly. David

For those of you who haven't noticed the ad in the paper, we are selling Krispy Kreme donuts from this office for a fundraiser for our youth building at our church. The cost is $6.00 per dozen and we must have your money ahead of time. The donuts will be delivered to The Hesperian office in Floydada on Friday, August 9, by 9:00 a.m. Money must be in to us by August 7th. The pastor of our church has already sold 100 dozen and he has challenged all of us to a Krispy Kreme duel. I don't know if I can make it to 100 dozen but we are selling them fast. I wish it was as easy to sell advertising as it has been to sell Krispy Kreme donuts. However--I do have one piece of good news about advertising in this newspaper. We put in an ad last week about the fund raiser and people are already coming in to buy tickets because they saw the ad in this newspaper! I received a few funny trivia statements from a friend off of the internet a few weeks ago. I picked out some of the ones I thought were the funniest. I hope they bring a smile to you today.
"I read recipes the same way I read science fiction. I get to the end and think, 'Well, that's not going to happen!'" "The other night I ate at a real nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going." "Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents?" "How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?" "Doctors can be frustrating. You wait a month-and-a-half for an appointment, and he says, 'I wish you'd come to me sooner." "You read about all these terrorists, most of them came here legally, but they hung around on these expired visas, some for as long as 10-15 years. Now, compare that to Blockbuster; you are two days late with a video and those people are all over you. Let's put Blockbuster in charge of immigration."
