COACH ROBIN NIXON AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LEE HURT

Robin Nixon Named Tennis Coach of the Year

By Nick Long

Robin Nixon of Floydada was recognized Friday, December 6 as the Class 2A Tennis Coach of the Year during the Texas Tennis Coaches Association's Annual Conference at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch.

Approximately 400 people were in attendance at the banquet, that honored the distinguished coach of each of the high school classifications, the collegiate level and inductees into the association's Hall of Fame.

Floydada Assistant Tennis Coach Regina Smith made the presentation to Coach Nixon. Coach Smith explained that Coach Nixon was hired 9 years ago by Superintendent Jerry Cannon to rebuild the Floydada Tennis program. Coach Smith said, "Coach Nixon is highly thought of by her players - past and present. She has a sincere love and passion for the game of tennis, and it has spread." Coach Smith also noted that Coach Nixon is highly regarded by her coaching peers.

Coach Smith went on to say, "When Coach Nixon took the program there were 10 kids playing tennis. This past year Floydada had 30 out in high school and in excess of 40 in junior high. She leads summer tennis camps for 1st graders to adults that included 110 participants this past summer."

The increasing number of players continues to bring more success. Floydada has now won four consecutive District titles, and three straight Region I Team Tennis Championships. The Whirlwind tennis program reached a significant milestone this past spring when the Girls Doubles Team of Jenna Payne and Jessica Castaneda finished as the State Runnerups.

"I remember the years when we were being shut out and the kids who were taking the lumps. This group took the game and showed others how fun it could be," said Coach Nixon. "We were elated when we won anything at the tournaments, then we were 3rd at District and qualified one for Regional. That was followed by two Regional qualifiers and it started snowballing. The kids kept working and the success stories followed. It makes me feel good when the tennis court lights are on at night."

In 2001 Rebecca Warren was the first Floydada player to survive the first two rounds of Regional and she placed 3rd. She repeated the feat in 2002. This is the same year when Payne-Castaneda broke through by winning the Region I Doubles title and then won a Silver Medal at State.

"This award is for the Whirlwind program," said a very humble Coach Nixon. "This would not be possible without Regina Smith, Rosemary Finley, Sammy Bradley and the overwhelming support from Athletic Director Lee Hurt, the Booster Club and the parents."

"Robin works extremely hard. She is dedicated to the tennis program and getting results," said Lee Hurt. "She has built one of the stronger 2A programs around this area and has done a super job in getting there."

"I love the sport, I love to play it, and I love to coach it," said a smiling Coach Nixon. "I have enjoyed seeing the kids succeed and build confidence in themselves. I have enjoyed the relationship with the kids and getting to see them when they come home and hear the successes they are enjoying now. Tennis is something they can enjoy the rest of their lives."

A reception in honor of Robin Nixon will be held on Monday, December 16th from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the home of Dana Crossland. All former and present players, parents and supporters are invited to attend.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Dear citizens of Floyd County, what an impressive undertaking for Floyd County! The Veteran's Memorial splendidly pays tribute to those men and women from your county who served our country through military service. My dad's name, W. Brice Allen, is etched forever in stone along with my three uncles' names.

I thank you Floyd County, and thank you Skyler Cornelius for the vision and for the reality of creating this positive, lasting, and deserved contribution to our veterans.

Sincerely,

Judy Allen

Corpus Christi

Dear Editor,

May I say I have been deeply moved just reading about this wonderful Memorial. How wonderful it must have been to have been there in person. I call Floydada my home town although I left there in 1943 after graduating form High School.

I have enjoyed going through some of your archives, few names are familiar now where once almost every name in town was known. Such is life. I will keep a close watch on your website from now on as I want the video when it is for sale.

My niece Carrie Thayer Welty told us to pull up your web site and she had to give me your full name - Hesperian-Beacon. Times have changed. I recall the news paper being "The Floyd County Hesperian". I should have my three brothers names on the Memorial; two in WWII and one from the Korean conflict. They are Charles P. Cox, US Navy; Emory H. Cox, US Army; James W. Cox, US Army.

Thank you for your lovely write up and the fine pictures. As a displaced Floydadian, I appreciate what has been done in "My Home Town."

A special big thank you to young Skyler.

Sincerely,

Frances Cox Dilley

This is a "writer's block" column. I could think of nothing worthwhile to pass on, so I thought I would pass on a silly e-mail I got. Maybe it will give you a laugh.

The Pastor and the

Choir Director

Church feuds are not uncommon. But when the pastor and the choir director get into it, stand aside.

One week, our pastor decided to press his position by preaching on commitment, and how we should dedicate ourselves to service. That Sunday, the choir director led the choir in singing, 'I shall not be moved'.

The next Sunday, the pastor preached on giving and how we should gladly give to the work of the Lord. The choir director then led the song, 'Jesus paid it all'.

The next Sunday, the pastor preached on gossiping and how we should watch out tongues. The hymn was 'I love to Tell The Story'.

The pastor became disgusted over the situation, and the next Sunday he told the congregation he was considering resigning. The choir then sang, 'Oh, Why Not Tonight".

After the pastor resigned the next week, he preached his last sermon at the church telling the congregation that Jesus had led them there and Jesus was taking him away. The choir then sang, 'Oh, What a Friend We Have in Jesus.'
