WINNING AT
DOMINOES--A youngster stopped for a spell during Floydada's
Punkin Day to test his domino skills against the "pumpkin
farmers" sitting on the Floyd County Museum's outside
benches. The farmers show up every year and watch the Punkin
Day crowds go by. This year the Museum won 1st place in the
business category of the decorating contest. The Floydada
Care Center won 2nd place. The home of Clar and Judy Schacht
won 1st place in the residence division.
Burglars Caught Inside Kirk & Sons A burglar alarm sounding off at Kirk & Sons, in Floydada, led to the arrest of 2 men and put a stop to a string of week-end burglaries of downtown businesses. "We have no idea exactly how many businesses were burglarized," said Police Chief Darrell Gooch. "We are still taking reports and processing paper work." What is known at this time, according to Gooch, is that Azteca, Producers, Bibi's Dream Cuts, and a building attached to Payne Pharmacy were burglarized late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The men hit again late Sunday, and early Monday with burglaries of Caprock Motor Parts and Don Hardy Fuel Efficient Irrigation. "After they burglarized Don Hardy's they took the stolen items home and returned again to burglarize Kirk & Sons," said Gooch. "They broke in the back door and were inside when the alarm went off at 1:30 a.m. A city officer was across the street at the county jail when the alarm sounded. He ran around the back of Kirk and Sons and secured the back door. Good citizens, who had been visiting with the officer (and were standing across the street), shined their flashlights through the front windows of Kirk and Sons. "The lights in front and the officer in back made the burglars think there were cops all over the place. "When back-up arrived, police captured the burglars." Arrested inside Kirk and Sons were: Rocky Terrell, 25, of Floydada, and Jimmy Holland, 19, of Floydada. "A third suspect, a 21 year old man, has been identified and is cooperating with police," said Gooch. "He has not been arrested at this time." Most of the property stolen during the burglaries has been recovered.
Escaped Prisoner Apprehended A prisoner, Terry Lynn Williams, who escaped from the Floyd County Jail on October 4, was captured in Sierra Blanca, Texas. October 8. When apprehended he was driving a pickup stolen out of Floydada. Williams, 40, of Floydada, was originally arrested for domestic violence/assault, on October 4 and taken to the Floyd County Jail. While being booked into jail Williams became aggressive and the booking office backed out of the room to wait for backup. While the officer was outside the room and waiting for backup, Williams destroyed everything in the room (including the computer) and used a metal chair to break out a window. When the officers reentered the room they found it empty. Williams had fled out of the open window. The same night a pickup truck was stolen and police suspected that Williams had fled in the stolen truck. "Williams was caught at a border patrol check point," said Sheriff Royce Gilmore. "When he returns he will face additional charges of escape, criminal mischief, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle."
New Congressional Districts Will Bring New Faces to Floyd County Six months of fighting over congressional redistricting ended Sunday, when the Senate passed a redistricting plan in their 3rd special legislative session. The new map moves Floyd County from Congressional District #13 to District #19. The bill now goes to Gov. Rick Perry to sign into law. Democrats have pledged to take their fight to court. Texas voters have elected Republicans to all 27 of the statewide offices, but Democrats still hold a majority in the state's 32-member congressional delegation. Republicans say that's because boundaries for congressional districts have been drawn to benefit Democrats. The new map, approved in the Senate by a 17-14 vote, will likely give the Republicans the majority in the Texas Congressional delegation that is now ruled 17-15 by Democrats. The new plan could give Republicans 21 or 22 seats in Congress. Floyd County will now be a part of District 19. Incumbents Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, and Charlie Stenholm, D-Abilene, will now have to face each other in the general election to decide who will represent the new district. District #19 is made up of 27 counties with a Democrat/Republican split of 39.9/60.1. (This number is based on voting in the 2002 race for lieutenant governor). Other counties in District #19 will be: Lubbock, Hockley, Cochran, Hale, Lamb, Bailey, Castro, Parmer, Deaf Smith, Yoakum, Terry Lynn, Garza, Kent, Gaines, Borden, Howard, Fisher, part of Nolan, Taylor, Callahan, Shackleford, Callahan, Eastland, Stephens, Young, and part of Archer. Redistricting affects only Floyd County's congressional seat. The County will lose the representation by the current representative, Congressman Mac Thornberry. Thornberry's District 13 now includes 44 counties, with Potter, Randall, and Wichita counties part of the district. Floyd County will continue to be represented in the Texas legislature by Texas Representative Pete Laney (D), and Texas Senator Robert Duncan (R). U.S. HOUSE Congress members from Texas: 32 * Democrats: 17 * Republicans: 15
Total members of Congress: 435 * Democrats: 205 *Independents: 1 * Republicans: 229
TEXAS LEGISLATURE Texas House Members: 150 * Democrats: 62 * Republicans: 88 Texas Senate Members: 31 * Democrats: 12 * Republicans: 19
