Floydada Chamber Honors Citizens
The Floydada Chamber of Commerce honored outstanding citizens during the annual Chamber Banquet Monday night. Floydada businesswoman Laura Farris was recognized as the Citizen of the Year and Floydada High School Junior Skyler Cornelius was given the Extra Mile Award. Janet Milam was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award and Floydada Police Chief Darrell Gooch was named Employer of the Year. Jimmy Willson presented Farris with the Citizen of the Year award and praised her for her hard work within the community. A Pampa native, Farris graduated from Texas Tech in 1984. She moved to Floydada from Lubbock in 1988 after purchasing Floydada Ford. She expanded that business and opened NAPA Auto Parts in 1997 and then opened Radio Shack in 1998. She is currently in the stages of opening an Ace Hardware Store. Farris is the past president of Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce. She was instrumental in starting the Kids Korner Day Care Center inside Floydada's First Christian Church. She has been married to Tom Farris for 13 years. They have an eight year old son, T.K. Tim Assiter presented Skyler Cornelius with the Extra Mile Award. Assiter put together a power-point slide presentation highlighting Skyler's work on the Floyd County Veteran's Memorial project. "The Cornelius family deserves great credit for their vision, help, and determination," said Assiter. The history of the project was detailed with photos and Assiter reminded the audience that Skyler and other volunteers had raised $95,000 to erect the 10 panels. In accepting the award, Skyler thanked the community for the support and also thanked his mother for her work. "I couldn't have done it without her," said Skyler. Another award, the Outstanding Service Award, was accepted by Julianne Cornelius on behalf of the Floyd County Adult and Junior 4-H Board who had assisted with the Memorial project. The Volunteer of the Year recipient, Janet Milam, was also recognized for her tireless efforts in collecting names for the Veteran's Memorial. "Janet has spent thousands of hours compiling and proof reading names that are inscribed on the Floyd County Veteran's Memorial," said the award's presenter, Floydada City Manager Gary Brown. "She worked diligently to see that no one would be left out,...and continues her work to compile the names of those who deserve to be honored." Milam began her teaching career in Floydada High School in January 1964. She taught business classes, sponsored cheerleaders and served as yearbook sponsor. She retired in 1998. "Her interest in genealogy drew her to the Museum where she quickly became involved in helping others trace their family histories," said Brown. "She has typed and shelved many volumes of indexes that allows a faster and more thorough record search. Janet has driven many miles helping others locate gravesites and has also assisted in the search for ex-students addresses." Janet is also a volunteer with the Spirit of Sharing where she gathers and distributes clothing and food to those in need. She also drives citizens to doctor's appointments and takes them shopping for personal and household needs. Mary Ann Reyes, of the Floydada Chamber, presented the Employer of the Year Award to Darrell Gooch. Gooch was nominated by his fellow officers who praised him for the hours he puts in at work and his unselfish acts in helping his staff and the community. Radio broadcaster Tumbleweed Smith brought a humorous presentation to the Banquet with his excerpts from actual radio interviews with "real-life characters" across Texas. by Alice Gilroy Starting next week we will be printing the names of family members who are fighting in the Iraq War. If you have a family member who is involved in that conflict in some way, please call us or drop us a note and let us know. We will want his or her name, rank, division, and relationship or their "local" connection. For instance--are they a graduate of a Floyd County school, or related to someone who lives in Floyd County. We will print the names under a heading entitled: "Serving In The Iraqi War--Please Pray For Them and Their Families". I believe we are all currently suffering from "information overload". As Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said, "We've been at war for 4 days, but the 24 hour a day coverage makes it seems like weeks." Obviously we have to remember it won't be over in a matter of days. So what do you do? How do you cope? I believe nothing is bigger than God. I believe, if God chooses, even the sand storms will end up being a blessing for our troops. I believe, if God chooses, that chemical weapons could be fired at our troops and God's breath could blow it away from them. I believe that no prayer is ignored and that prayer is the only thing that will bring our troops home safely and help our leaders make wise decisions. I believe that in the midst of all the lies, treachery, terrorism, and barbaric acts of Hussein's henchmen--the only thing that can keep us from losing our resolve and keep us from despair-- is prayer. I believe that no matter how well trained our troops are--no matter how well equipped our troops are--no matter how many more soldiers we have--only God's intervention will bring our troops back to us. I believe that intervention comes about as a direct result of the prayers offered up to Him. So--we will run a list of soldiers sacrificing for us. We will run the list in the hopes that you sacrifice a little bit of your time to do your part in this war--to pray. Please.
