Sherman, Williams, Fortenberry, Norrell, Lipham, Foster, and Powell show champions
Rabbits and goats added a new twist to the Floyd County Stock Show this year. Even though new problems cropped up with judging and showing new categories, the rabbit and goat shows were considered a success by participants and stock show observers. Lockney youngster Anna Sherman won the "Best of Show" category with her Mini Rex rabbit, and Jay Ragland, of Lockney, won "Reserve Best In Show" with a New Zealand rabbit. Goats also made their debut at the Floyd County Stock Show and Kortney Williams, of Floydada, earned the Grand Champion title with her 82 lb. medium weight goat. Molly Long's 99 lb. heavy weight goat was named Reserve Grand Champion. In the Lamb Show, Lockney 4-H'er Eddie Fortenberry's 127 lb. medium-heavy Medium Wool was named the Grand Champion. Tasha Powell, of Lockney, won the Reserve Grand Champion title with her 117 lb. medium weight Medium Wool lamb. The Swine Show Grand Champion was shown by Ashley Norrell, of Floydada. She won with her 246 lb. Hampshire. The Reserve Grand Champion Swine was won with the 207 lb. Cross belonging to Taylor Beedy, of Floydada. Floydada youngster Mason Lipham showed the Grand Champion steer--a 1,285 lb. Cross. The Reserve Grand Champion steer, a 1,355 lb. Cross, was shown by Taylor Beedy, of Floydada. Senee Foster, of Lockney, had the Overall Grand Champion Heifer--a champion European Heifer. Tylee Williams, of Lockney, showed the Reserve Grand Champion Heifer--her breed champion Angus. Lamb Showmanship honors went to Junior Showman Krista Rasco, and Senior Showman Tasha Powell. Goat Showmanship honors were earned by Junior Showman Kortney Williams, and Senior Showman Jesalyn Bradley. Chyann Powell earned the Showmanship buckle in the Rabbit Show. In the Swine Show, Randa Shurbet was named the Junior Showman, and Kayla Kelley was named Senior Showman. In the Steer Show, Mandi Wood was named Senior Showman, and Brady Ragland was named Junior Showman. Seven heifers, 30 steers, 29 lambs, and 189 swine were shown. Twenty-five goats and 20 rabbits were entered in the show. The next Junior Rabbit Show will be on March 1st at the Unity Center. Plenty of hilarious action and crowd participation will keep the old Longhorn Gym buzzing, January 26th, during the popular Donkey Basketball Tournament. There will be 3 games played, between 4 different teams. The game will kick off at 3:00 p.m. and should be over by 4:30 p.m--in plenty of time to get back home for the Super Bowl game. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought at the LISD office, at Citibank, or from any Junior Class member. Tickets are $5.00 if bought in advance and $7.00 if bought at the door. All proceeds go to the Junior Class. Donkey Basketball is played with four donkeys and four riders on each team. Names of some of the donkeys are: Super Stupid, Elvis, Rigor Mortis, Thunder Ball, Snuffy, Kilroy, and Honey Pot (the world's buckin'est donkey). Although there are rules to the games--the players have a hard time sticking to them, and the donkeys ignore the rules altogether. At the beginning of the game, players lead their donkeys onto the court and line up under the baskets. Players must stay dismounted until they and the donkeys are introduced, and the referee blows the whistle and throws the ball onto the court. Players may then ride or lead their donkey to the ball. When passing the ball between players one or the other must be mounted. Players must also be mounted to shoot, steal the ball, or block passes and shots. You may lead the donkey to the basket, but you must be mounted to shoot. (Of course--the donkeys never stay under the basket. Most of the time they don't stay anywhere near the basket). The ball cannot be held more than fifteen seconds. Team cooperation is at its worst with players who refuse to move or love to see their own teammates tumble over their heads. Football helmets are a must in this game--and a great sense of humor comes in handy.

This will be the last time you see our newspaper on this size paper. Starting next week you may notice that our newspaper is smaller in width and depth. This change is being made because of smaller paper in the printing press. Blanco Offset Printing is making these changes to keep our costs down. The price of the larger paper is going up. If they continued to print off of this current size paper our prices would go up. If our prices went up--your prices would go up. Our new size paper will be the same size as the Lubbock Avalanche and Plainview Daily Herald currently use. They have been printing off the smaller size for quite some time. Old habits are hard to break and it is going to be quite an adjustment in this office. We have a lot of format changes to make. So the readers won't be the only ones having to get used to the new look. I guess we will all adjust and life will go on. Jeffrey Hunter, a graduate of Lockney High School, has spent his Christmas break helping us here in the office. He has been such an asset to us and we really hate to see him go back to school. He is a computer guru and artist and he has helped us make the adjustment to the new formats. God sent him just in time. God always answers my prayers in the most delightful and unexpected ways. We've asked Jeffrey to quit school and come here full time, but he said no. He will be spending the next 6 months studying in Greece and he told us he wasn't even going to take his cell phone so we could call and ask computer questions. Sounds like a typical computer programer to me!
